Larry Trainor, known as Negative Man, is a central figure in Doom Patrol. Once a U.S. Air Force pilot, Larry's life changed forever after a flight accident exposed him to a mysterious entity known as the Negative Spirit. The exposure left his body severely burned and radioactive, forcing him to wear special bandages to protect others, and merging him with the alien energy that gives him powerful, yet unstable abilities.

Before the accident, Larry had a romantic relationship with John Bowers, a fellow military officer. Their love had to be kept secret due to the harsh social climate of the 1960s and the military’s stance on homosexuality. This secrecy caused Larry emotional turmoil, as he struggled between his identity, duty, and desire for freedom.

Following the accident, Larry disappeared from John’s life completely, as he was taken in by the Chief and hidden away from the world. John assumed Larry had died. Over the years, John went on to live a full life, eventually finding a partner, though the memory of Larry remained a quiet part of his past.

Years later, Larry finds John in his old age. Their reunion is deeply emotional — filled with regret, compassion, and bittersweet nostalgia. Although they had spent decades apart, the connection they once shared still held power. John, now elderly, offers Larry forgiveness and peace, helping him begin to heal from decades of internal conflict.
