Last Breath (2025) is a survival thriller based on the true story of commercial diver Chris Lemons, who faced a near-death experience in the North Sea in 2012. The film begins with Chris and his diving team conducting routine maintenance on an underwater gas pipeline. Suddenly, their support vessel loses its dynamic positioning system due to technical failure during a storm, causing the ship to drift and severing Chris’s lifeline—his umbilical cable that supplies air, heat, and communication.
With only a few minutes of emergency oxygen in his backup tank, Chris is left stranded in complete darkness 300 feet underwater. His team above the surface, led by dive supervisor Duncan Allcock and fellow diver Dave Yuasa, faces the nearly impossible task of finding and rescuing him in one of the most hostile environments on Earth. Tension builds as the crew uses a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to search the seafloor under severe weather and time pressure.
Â
Incredibly, after being without a main air supply for over 30 minutes, Chris is located unconscious. Against all expectations, his crewmates manage to bring him back to the diving bell and perform emergency resuscitation. Miraculously, he begins to breathe again and later recovers fully without lasting brain damage. His survival defies medical logic and becomes the emotional core of the film.

The film explores more than just a dramatic rescue—it delves into themes of resilience, human connection, and the risks of deep-sea professions. The psychological toll on the team, their loyalty, and the split-second decisions they must make highlight the emotional stakes involved. Through its tense and grounded storytelling, Last Breath shows how teamwork, training, and sheer willpower can make the impossible possible.

Critically acclaimed for its realism and emotional depth, Last Breath features strong performances from Finn Cole as Chris, Woody Harrelson as Duncan, and Simu Liu as Dave. The film avoids sensationalism, choosing instead to honor the true events with authenticity and respect. With its blend of suspense and human drama, it stands as both a gripping thriller and an inspiring story of survival.
