The VVitch (2015) is a chilling psychological horror film set in 1630s New England. The story follows a Puritan family who is banished from their colony due to religious disagreements and forced to live in isolation on the edge of a dense, eerie forest. The family consists of the father William, the mother Katherine, their eldest daughter Thomasin, son Caleb, twins Mercy and Jonas, and a newborn baby, Samuel. Shortly after settling on their remote farm, tragedy strikes when baby Samuel mysteriously vanishes while under Thomasinβs care.
Β
As the family struggles to understand the disappearance, they begin to experience increasingly strange and terrifying events. Caleb becomes lost in the forest and returns naked, feverish, and eventually dies under mysterious circumstances. The twins speak of a goat named Black Phillip, who they claim speaks to them, while the familyβs crops fail, and tensions between them grow. Suspicions of witchcraft arise, and Thomasin becomes the main target of fear and blame, especially from her mother, who grieves the loss of her children.

The family's fear and paranoia spiral out of control as they become convinced that a witch is tormenting them. Accusations are thrown, and religious hysteria intensifies. William tries to maintain order but ultimately cannot stop the family from descending into chaos. One by one, the family members die through disturbing and supernatural means, with Black Phillipβs presence growing more sinister.

After a brutal night in which Thomasin is forced to kill her own mother in self-defense, she is left completely alone. Confused, exhausted, and emotionally shattered, she confronts Black Phillip, who is revealed to be the Devil in disguise. He offers her a chance to βlive deliciouslyβ if she signs his book. With nowhere left to turn and having lost her entire family, Thomasin agrees.

In the final haunting scene, Thomasin walks naked into the forest and joins a coven of witches dancing around a fire, levitating into the night sky. The film ends on this chilling note, blending historical authenticity with supernatural horror. The VVitch is praised for its atmosphere, slow-building dread, and exploration of religious extremism, repression, and feminine liberation in a deeply patriarchal society.
