Tom Ripley, a young man of modest means in 1950s New York, is mistakenly identified as a Princeton graduate and hired by a wealthy shipbuilder to retrieve his son, Dickie Greenleaf, who is living a luxurious, carefree life in Italy. Seeing an opportunity to escape his dull existence, Tom accepts the offer and travels to the small seaside town of Mongibello. There, he befriends Dickie and his girlfriend Marge, quickly becoming enamored with their glamorous lifestyle.

As Tom spends more time with Dickie, his admiration turns into obsession. He begins to imitate Dickie's mannerisms, dress, and tastes, subtly inserting himself into Dickie’s world. However, Dickie soon grows tired of Tom’s clingy nature and tries to distance himself. Feeling rejected and desperate to maintain the life he’s come to love, Tom commits a shocking act: he murders Dickie and assumes his identity.
