Disobedience (2017)

In Disobedience, photographer Ronit Krushka returns to her Orthodox Jewish community in London after the sudden death of her estranged father, a respected rabbi. Her arrival sends ripples through the tight-knit religious world she once fled — a world that still carries the pain of her rejection. Ronit’s return is not just about mourning, but about confronting the life, the rules, and the love she left behind.

Among those still within the community are Esti, Ronit’s childhood best friend — and more than that, her former secret lover — and Dovid, a devout and kind man who is both Ronit’s cousin and Esti’s husband. The three are pulled into a delicate emotional triangle, each holding tension between faith, freedom, and desire. For Esti, Ronit’s reappearance reopens a door she had forced shut in the name of duty and survival.

As the days pass, long-buried feelings resurface. Esti and Ronit’s connection reignites with quiet intensity, threatening to unravel the careful balance Esti has maintained in her life. Their stolen moments together are both tender and tragic — a rebellion not just against religion, but against the repression they’ve internalized. The community, ever watchful, begins to sense something is stirring beneath the surface.

The film explores powerful themes of identity, autonomy, and the conflict between personal truth and cultural expectations. Esti faces a life-changing decision: continue the life she was expected to live, or finally choose herself. Ronit, too, must come to terms with her own anger, grief, and complicated relationship with the community that both shaped and rejected her.

Disobedience is a quiet, emotionally rich drama anchored by stunning performances from Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams. With haunting beauty and raw vulnerability, it asks whether love must always come at a cost — and whether freedom means leaving something behind, or simply finding the strength to live honestly within it.
